Key Highlights

  • D3 Energy lifts total contingent helium resources by 65% across its South African portfolio
  • Maiden ER386 resource adds 14 BCF of recoverable helium and 228 BCF of methane
  • Company says South African helium province continues to deliver world-class concentrations
  • Rising geopolitical tensions and tightening global helium supply place fresh focus on alternative producers

D3 Energy (ASX: D3E) has significantly expanded its helium footprint in South Africa, unveiling a major resource upgrade that strengthens its position in one of the world’s emerging helium provinces at a time when global supply chains remain under pressure.

The company announced a maiden contingent and prospective resource for its ER386 permit area, delivering a substantial lift to its broader helium and methane portfolio across the Free State region.

Shares in D3 Energy (ASX: D3E) were trading 5.71% higher at 37 cents on Thursday afternoon, extending the stock’s remarkable 12-month rally of more than 469%.

The latest resource certification comes as helium continues to attract growing strategic attention globally. The gas, once largely overlooked outside industrial circles, has become increasingly important in medical imaging, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace systems and advanced scientific research.

Unlike many commodities, helium cannot be synthetically manufactured at scale. Once released into the atmosphere, it escapes permanently into space, making large natural discoveries increasingly valuable.

A major resource jump

The standout figure from D3’s latest update was the sharp increase in recoverable helium volumes across its South African permits.

The newly certified ER386 permit contains an estimated 14 billion cubic feet of 2C recoverable helium alongside 228.1 billion cubic feet of methane.

The permit also hosts a prospective helium resource of 25.4 BCF.

When combined with D3’s existing ER315 and PR016 permits, the company’s total 2C recoverable helium resource now stands at 35.6 BCF, representing a 65% increase from previous estimates.

Its total 2U prospective helium resource climbed 94% to 52.5 BCF.

The methane resource base also expanded materially, with combined contingent methane resources reaching 690.3 BCF.

For a company with a market capitalisation of just over $39 million, the scale of the upgrade represents a major shift in market positioning.

The “helium gold rush”

The announcement arrives during a period of growing concern around global helium supply security.

Historically, helium production has been dominated by the United States, Qatar and Algeria. However, geopolitical disruptions, supply outages and declining reserve quality have increasingly tightened global availability.

Recent Middle East tensions have also renewed concerns around export reliability from major helium-producing regions.

D3 Energy Managing Director and CEO David Casey said the company’s South African location could become increasingly important in future supply chains.

The certification of a maiden Contingent Resource at ER386 is yet another milestone for D3 and further confirmation of the quality and scale of the helium province,” Casey said.

It has consistently delivered world-class helium concentrations.”

Casey added that the broader portfolio now positions D3 among the more significant helium players globally.

The combined reserve and resource base provides D3 with one of the world’s most significant helium provinces, which is becoming increasingly important given its Southern Hemisphere location,” he said.

Why South Africa matters

What makes D3’s acreage particularly interesting is the concentration profile.

The company noted that nearby discoveries within the same geological province have recorded helium concentrations as high as 8%, far above the global average of less than 1%.

Higher helium concentrations can materially improve project economics because less gas needs to be processed to extract commercial volumes.

The geological significance of the ER386 permit also appears to validate the continuity of key fault systems already identified across D3’s flagship acreage.

Independent certification confirmed that the Virginia and Ventersburg fault systems extend into ER386, reinforcing the broader scale potential of the basin.

Importantly, D3 holds a 100% working interest in the permit, giving the company full control over development planning and potential future partnership discussions.

Dual revenue potential

Another feature attracting market attention is the presence of both helium and methane across the portfolio.

While helium remains the strategic headline commodity, methane could provide an additional revenue stream capable of supporting future project economics.

This dual-product profile may help reduce some of the commercial risks often associated with early-stage helium projects.

The company is already progressing toward a Production Right for portions of its acreage under PR016, while ER386 is expected to become part of its next-stage appraisal and development pipeline.

Exploration drilling and fresh 2D seismic work at ER386 are currently planned for 2027.

Still early-stage, but momentum is building

Despite the excitement surrounding the upgrade, D3 acknowledged that parts of the resource remain classified as contingent and prospective.

That means further work is still required to confirm reservoir quality, gas composition and long-term commercial viability.

Like all early-stage energy projects, the pathway from resource certification to production remains complex and capital intensive.

Still, the market response suggests growing recognition that helium is becoming far more than a niche industrial gas story.

As semiconductor manufacturing, MRI demand, aerospace technologies and AI infrastructure continue expanding globally, secure helium supply is increasingly being viewed as a strategic necessity rather than a specialty commodity.

For D3 Energy (ASX: D3E), the latest upgrade appears to have shifted the company from speculative explorer toward a more serious contender in the emerging global helium market.
