Bonanza Grades: Unity Metals' (ASX: UM1) First O'Phlay Drill Hole Delivers 10.5g/t Gold

Unity Metals (ASX: UM1) has delivered a promising start to drilling at its O’Phlay Gold Project in Cambodia, intersecting broad zones of gold mineralisation, including a high-grade interval of 5 metres grading 10.5 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, in the very first modern drill hole completed at the historic mining site.

For exploration companies, first holes rarely tell the whole story. But when the opening result confirms both broad mineralisation and bonanza-style grades beneath historical workings, it often provides the first indication that a much larger system could be present.

The standout intercept from hole 26DDCM001 returned 40 metres at 1.9g/t gold from 82 metres, including 17 metres at 3.9g/t gold and 5 metres at 10.5g/t gold from 85 metres. A second mineralised zone returned 8.5 metres at 0.7g/t gold from 129.5 metres.

Importantly, this is the first time the O’Phlay Project has been tested using modern diamond drilling, despite evidence of historical open-pit and underground mining in the area.

The geological setting is also drawing attention. Unity said the gold is hosted within intrusion-related gold mineralisation, a style comparable to its nearby Ngot Gold Project and Emerald Resources’ producing Okvau Gold Mine, located about 60 kilometres to the west. Similar geological settings can provide useful exploration clues, although each project ultimately requires its own drilling and resource definition.

What makes the discovery particularly encouraging is that the mineralisation remains open both at depth and along strike, leaving room for further expansion as drilling continues.

Only four of the planned 21 drill holes have been completed so far, covering 570.6 metres of a planned 3,000-metre campaign. Assays for holes two through four are still pending, and the company has already indicated it intends to extend the drilling program following the strength of the initial results.

Beyond the first drill hole, Unity has identified two large gradient array induced polarisation (GAIP) chargeability anomalies stretching approximately 1.8 kilometres across the eastern portion of the Camp Prospect. These geophysical targets remain largely untested and could provide additional exploration opportunities if drilling confirms the presence of similar mineralisation.

Cambodia has steadily emerged as an exploration destination over recent years following the successful development of the Okvau Gold Mine, which demonstrated the country’s potential to host commercially viable gold deposits. While exploration activity remains relatively limited compared with more established mining jurisdictions, companies continue targeting underexplored regions with favourable geology.

Founder and Managing Director Craig Mackay said the company believes the first results warrant immediate follow-up.

“We are very excited about the results from our first hole in our maiden drilling at the O’Phlay Project. Whilst we have recently discovered gold across the Ngot Project, the gold intersection of 40m @ 1.9g/t gold at O’Phlay is by far the best obtained by Unity in Cambodia to date. It demands immediate follow-up.

“This first hole was drilled directly beneath a broad zone of gold-bearing veins exposed in open pits at the Camp Prospect, next door to the historical Vietnamese processing plant. It also tested a strong and coincident, north-south-trending, GAIP chargeability anomaly.

“There are two of these prominent GAIP chargeability anomalies that have been located in the eastern portion of the Camp Prospect, that collectively extend over 1.8km. We eagerly await the results of our planned drilling along these extensive target areas. More assays are expected in the coming weeks.”

Shares in Unity Metals climbed around 35% intraday to $0.135 following the announcement, reflecting growing market interest in the discovery. However, the company remains a micro-cap explorer with a market value of approximately $19.7 million, meaning future assay results are likely to have a significant impact on sentiment.

While the maiden hole has provided an encouraging start, it is still early days. A single drill intercept does not define a mineral resource, and the next phase of drilling will determine whether the high-grade mineralisation extends across the broader target area. For now, O’Phlay has moved firmly onto the radar as one of Cambodia’s emerging gold exploration stories.
