Metal Powder Works Ltd (ASX: MPW) has delivered a breakthrough that moves its technology from experimental to commercially credible, at a time when markets are increasingly rewarding real outcomes over future promises.

 

The company’s shares jumped 10.3% to $2.57, extending a remarkable one-year return of over 500%, as investors responded to independently verified results that place its titanium powder well above global standards.

Independent testing confirmed that its DirectPowder titanium feedstock meets all ASTM B384 structural benchmarks for additive manufacturing. These standards are typically used to qualify materials for aerospace and defence applications, where failure is not an option.

MPW recorded an ultimate tensile strength of 112 ksi against a benchmark of 50 ksi. Yield strength came in at 94 ksi versus a 40 ksi requirement, while ductility reached 29% compared to a 20% minimum.

 

In simple terms, the material is not just compliant. It is materially stronger, more flexible, and more reliable than required.

 

Solving a Long-Standing Trade-Off

 

Titanium manufacturing has always involved compromise.

 

Higher strength typically comes at the cost of purity, as oxygen content increases during production. MPW appears to have broken that trade-off.

 

The company has achieved mechanical performance aligned with higher-grade titanium while maintaining low oxygen levels of 0.25% or less. This is a key threshold for aerospace applications where material integrity is critical.

 

Managing Director John Barnes explained the significance clearly.

 

“MPW can supply qualification-grade CP titanium at lower cost than atomised or HDH alternatives at equivalent or better oxygen control and purity, with better lot-to-lot consistency. This positions MPW powder to be qualified once and specified broadly across customer programmes.”

 

He added, “We have produced hundreds of kilograms of this powder, all of it meeting the Grade 2 oxygen specification at or below 0.25%, which is the challenge with titanium that matters for structural aerospace applications. The mechanical results go further. We are meeting the higher mechanical thresholds of Grade 4, while maintaining Grade 2 oxygen control. Our powder works.”

 

From Lab to Production Floor

 

What separates this announcement from many early-stage technology claims is scale.

 

MPW has already produced hundreds of kilograms of its titanium powder, with consistent quality and no production defects such as fines or irregular particle shapes.

 

The material has now been validated across two key additive manufacturing processes. Laser Powder Bed Fusion, the dominant global 3D printing method, and cold spray technology used for industrial repair and maintenance.

 

This dual validation is significant.

 

Most competitors require different powders for different applications. MPW is demonstrating a single feedstock that works across both, simplifying supply chains for major customers.
